Description
The study aims at illuminating the worship of Ares in the Ionian city of Metropolis, which is traceable in both Epigraphy and Numismatics from the second century B.C. to the third century A.D. The current state of research shows that in Metropolis there are about as many inscriptions concerning the cult of Ares as there are in all of Asia Minor. Together with the different types of Ares on Metropolitan coins, the source material provides the most extensive and differentiated knowledge of a cult for Ares in Asia Minor - so far a novelty in Asia Minor with regard to the god's importance and function. Based on the current numismatic and epigraphic source material, both the god's importance for this Ionian city and the information contained in the documents are accentuated and compared to the other evidence of cults in Asia Minor.
