Description
The online publication “Farben sehen! Antike im Spannungsfeld von historischem Bild und Raum” (Erlangen Collection of Antiquities, 13–17 March 2024) serves as a companion booklet to the transdisciplinary pop-up exhibition and presents the research of Dr K. Mann (Art History) and Dr A. Reinhardt (Archaeology). In a dialogue between two art genres, sculpture and decorated pottery, the texts illustrate the different perspectives on the meaning of colour in antiquity under the aspects of social structures, gender images and artistic concepts. Colour is contrasted as an instrument of gender differentiation, as a symbol of status and power and as an expression of the respective zeitgeist. This diversity of aspects is illuminated, with a focus on ancient polychromy, in the context of the history of the FAU Erlangen-Nürnberg's Collection of Antiquities which the introduction by F. Gapp and Dr. G. Gerleigner refers to.
